Bletchley Park was the central site of the Government Code and Cypher School. During WWII it regularly penetrated secret communications by Germany and their allies. The work done at the site is credited with shortening the war by at least two years.

The Duchess' grandmother, Valerie Glassborow, worked as a civilian staff member with her twin sister Mary managing the interception of enemy signals for decryption in Hut 16 (now renamed Hut 6).

Today's engagement marked the completion of a year-long, £8 million restoration project, which has returned the Bletchley Park buildings to their Second World War appearance and created new visitor facilities. The site fell into near-dereliction after the war.

The Duchess was shown around Hut 6, where she met with veterans and sat down to chat with Lady Marion Body who was a duty officer during WWII and who also worked with her grandmother.
